Dandruff is easily recognizable by the white flakes that appear in the hair and then on the shoulders. Dandruff is an embarrassing condition that affects many people. Having dandruff may cause a lack of confidence and self-esteem. People affected by dandruff tend to avoid dark clothes in the fear of getting exposed. If you’re troubled by dandruff, the snowy, dust-like stuff that falls from the scalp to the shoulders, you’re not alone. Nearly everyone has dandruff to some degree.

What is dandruff? Dandruff is the flaking of skin cells from the scalp. Some flaking is actually quite normal, its natural for your skin to shed old cells as it regrows new ones. But it can be excessive. Some predisposing factors such as oiliness of skin, and susceptibility to dandruff can cause it. Dandruff in the severe form may be caused by a fungus, of the Malassezia genus.

The term dandruff generally refers to the condition of the skin wherein shiny, silvery scales separate from the scalp and collect amidst the hair due to excessive or normal branny exfoliation of the epidermis. Apart from the skin of the scalp, dandruff can affect beard, nose, eyebrows, behind the ears, external ear, neck, shoulders etc. White flakes on the head or dandruff can be very annoying. This scalp disorder is a sign of an imbalance in the body. If not treated, dandruff cause morewsevere disorders like hair loss or sores on the scalp.

There is a common misconception that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp, or the drying effect of excessive shampooing. There is a difference between dandruff and dry scalp. Dry scalp is just lack of either moisture or natural oils on the scalp which may indeed lead to small, dry flakes, as well as itchiness or tightness of the scalp whereas dandruff is believed to be caused by a microscopic organism on the scalp called Malassezia furfur (also known as Pityrosporum ovale or Pityrosporum orbiculare). What is the cause of dandruff?

The most common cause of dandruff (also known as scruff, seborrheic dermatitis or seborrheic eczema) is believed to be the fungus Malassezia furfur. This fungus is found naturally on the skin surface of both healthy people and those with dandruff. When Malassezia furfur grows too rapidly, the natural renewal of cells is disturbed and dandruff appears with itching. A form of dandruff known as cradle cap occurs in newborns and infants.

Anti fungal shampoo is actually very widely available in most super markets. What you will want to look for is Ketoconazole. The -zole class of antifungals are one of the more effective treatments and will rid your scalp of the fungus causing this condition, a product that contains this is Nizoral.

If you still have dandruff you will need to dig a little deeper. Dandruff is a rather complicated condition and could actually be a sign of seborrhoeic dermatitis, or psoriasis. What you will need to focus on now is your diet, how you wash your hair, how dry your scalp is and how stressed you are.
